Which is Which?

One of these two men is a great hero of the Jewish people. The other is Natan Sharansky.

Harvey writes:
So it was an interesting lunch with Natan Sharansky. About 20 members of the synagogue met at the Chabbad House of Rabbi Mendi Zwiebel. His wife Channah prepared a very elaborate three course meal on very little notice. Sharanasky is not an imposing figure, but he does command the room.

His contention is that peace will not come until there is a free and democratic Palestinian state. He is very clear that the recent election of Hamas was not from a free people. He is very down on both American and Israeli liberals. They recognize and support dictators. He was also extremely upset at the various human rights groups and their double standard that cites Israel for rights violations without mentioning the arab states, North Korea or even Somalia.

He has a point. There is a reason why South Africa has such cold relations with Israel.

I think he is a little ambitious in suggesting that democratic institutions and a free Palestine would bring peace alone. Political Islam and democracy are incompatible. The levels of hatred in Palestine, especially with Israel's recent war crimes in the region make the area a breathing ground for extremism. In my opinion, peace can only exist with two sovereign states, the assertion that democracy brings peace is an age-old and naive statement. Secularized and cross-border institutions is the only way to undo the enormous destabilizing damage Israel has done in the region.

  4. Now who's being naive? Palestinian xenophobia and hatred is the cause of Israel's reprisal for rocket attacks, not the result of them.

Until the Palestinians stop making hatred for their neighbors the centerpiece of their education and culture, there is no prospect of peace.

Eh??? Strange conclusions. Palestinian xenophobia is the result of Israeli aggression and the resulting poverty and destruction in the region, it's a real shame what Israel has done to destabilize the area.

  6. Anonymous repeating an assertion contrary to fact doesn't make it any less false.

  9. Dear Jack,
The list of prominent Israelis or supporters openly weary of Obama on Israel - and Rahm Emanuel's recent linkage of a Palestinian state with support against Iran Iran - grows. Norman Podhoretz, Caroline Glick, Melanie Phillips, Alan Dershowitz - see today's frontpage - and Sharansky himself. His point is against imposing a PLO state now.

  10. Weary? He just got here. Or wary?

I think of Podhoretz as an ideologue and Glick as a screamer. I have never heard of Phillips. But Dershowitz and Sharansky are people whose opinions matter to me.

Nothing personal, but I am dice-y about secondhand characterizations of what someone else said. Where did you read Dershowitz' remarks? Sharansky's? Links?

  11. to RA-
The question isn't whether there should be a Palestinian state anytime soon. Not before the complete dismantling of the institutions of incitement and hatred everywhere in Palestinian society.

The question is what are Dershowitz and Sharansky saying about Obama and why?

Here is an excellent synopsis of the recent actions of Israel from a professor who use to serve in the IDF, Avi Shalim, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pdvo3-A4d4 . Of course Jack finds it difficult to accept internal criticisms of Israel's war crimes, due to his assertion that if one is against Israeli barbarism they must be anti-semitic. You are a laughable old fool and everything you stand for is disgraceful, shame on you. I cannot understand how you can sit so smug and advocate Israeli terrorism, you are an evil person for condoning it.
