Paradoxes of Urban Life

  1. Which reminds me of the time my niece asked me for advice about a terrorist scare at Cal Poly where she was teaching. Everyone was stocking up on food, water, propane fuel canisters, all sorts of survivalist stuff. She wanted to know if she should too.

I avuncularly pointed out that before terrorists could attack your town they had to have heard of it. The chances of Lompoc ever having come to bin Laden's attention are not great. So too with El Cerrito and all the other tedious little towns we all live in.

Conversely, everyone has heard of Dublin.
